On Thursday October 8th, WORKTECH26 New York attendees will have the opportunity to visit District Council 37’s new headquarters at 125 Barclay Street, a thoughtfully reimagined workplace that blends New York’s architectural heritage with a contemporary vision for collaboration, community, and member engagement.

Designed by The Switzer Group, the 265,000 square foot transformation breathes new life into the historic 1920s World Telegram building while celebrating its industrial character. Original features including exposed terracotta, concrete columns, and open ceilings have been carefully preserved and complemented by a new terracotta façade, expansive glazing, and flexible workspaces filled with natural light. The design balances the building’s historic fabric with modern workplace environments that encourage openness, connection, and adaptability.

The headquarters has been designed as more than an office, serving as a destination for both employees and members. Public spaces include a ground floor union hall, member resource centre, and rooftop event space with a garden, creating opportunities for learning, collaboration, and community. Throughout the building, materials such as steel, concrete, and oak are paired with graphics and historical imagery that celebrate DC37’s legacy of public service, workers’ rights, and social progress, creating a workplace that honours the past while supporting the future.
