TRENDS AND INNOVATIONS SHAPING THE FUTURE OF WORK IN LIFE SCIENCES

Unpacking the technologies, cultural shifts, and workplace strategies driving resilience, talent, and discovery in life sciences.

Future Spaces for Research and Teaching

The life sciences sector is evolving rapidly, shaped by AI, biotechnology, data-rich research, and new collaboration models. But are our physical spaces keeping pace? Professor Peter Madden, OBE, explores how futures thinking and innovation in the built environment can create flexible research hubs and digitally enhanced teaching spaces. Drawing on global foresight and cross-sector examples, he will challenge universities, developers, and employers to envision and deliver “future-ready” ecosystems that enable discovery, attract talent, and transform learning.

Mapping Work + Place Evolution through Ten Years of Science Projects

How have science workplaces evolved over the past decade, and what lessons can inform the future? In this keynote Julian reflects on a decade of designing and delivering science-led projects. Joined by Kasia for a fireside chat, they will explore shifting patterns in work and place, from the rise of interdisciplinary collaboration to new models of laboratory and office integration. The session will map how these changes are reshaping the life sciences workplace and highlight what’s next on the horizon.

Defining and Maximising ROI in a Multi-Use Environment

In today’s world where science, technology, and business converge, organisations must deliver workspaces balancing cost, flexibility, and human experience. This panel explores how to define and maximise ROI in multi-use environments, from labs to mobile teams and high-focus roles. Discover how inclusive design, support for neurodiverse employees, and digital tools can enable collaboration, performance, and innovation. Panellists will also examine the long-term value of supportive environments in STEM against immediate cost considerations.

Coffee and Networking

A united front - the developer, the tenant, the design and the operations

The future of science workspaces demands collaboration across developers, operators, designers, and scientists. Too often siloed, these perspectives must converge to create environments that balance technical performance, human experience, and long-term resilience. This expert panel will explore how to align real estate, design, and operational priorities with end-user needs, moving beyond transactional roles toward lasting partnerships that deliver flexible, future-ready facilities.

Enabling a Cancer Research Ecosystem: Placemaking and Sustainable Workplace Strategy at the Institute of Cancer Research

This session explores how the Institute of Cancer Research is reimagining its estate and workplace strategy to accelerate discovery and collaboration. With the London Cancer Hub at its core, developed with partners including The Royal Marsden, the ICR is building a research ecosystem that unites science, healthcare, and industry. Attendees will gain insights into its new Framework Plan and Workspace Strategy, methods to improve utilisation, productivity and wellbeing, and the critical role of design, culture, and leadership.
